Not a lot of people know this but Poppleton, near York, is the location of Poppleton Community Railway Nurseries. Since the 1880s York has been a major centre for production of plants for railway stations - and it still is. Railway privatisations were the death knell for this activity which did not sit well with the new order. In happier times Poppleton had made the East Coast Mainline stations bloom. After WW2 production switched to trees and shrubs to repair bomb damaged embankments. Long story short, the Poppleton nurseries still serve the community railway demand - Settle-Carlisle stations included.
Bedding plants arrive in season year by year. Grown by volunteers and planted by other volunteers.
Last autumn Settle stations winter bedding arrived and was planted out - with half a dozen or so sad looking specimens left over. Would we like them 'cos they're going in the bin?
More in hope than expectation we planted then in a fairly dire corner of the garden that might at least survive the building operations.
Are here are just some of them:
Let's hops they get through the current situation
