Well, not heaven exactly but the next best thing - the steps now give safe and steady access to the new viewing platform and seat. They are made from left-over sections of insulated wall from which the new rear extension is built.
Screwed and glued together and with anti-slip edges to the treads they are solid as a rock. Here's another evening view this week. It is dark in Settle but the western sky is still bright. Well worth the climb.
I just spent a few days walking around Ribblehead & Dent with my Dog Jasper, getting a train back (luckily it was not cancelled!) to Ribblehead! Amazing views, fabulous that this line is open, albeit no trains today (5th Nov!). On my way back to Cheshire I stopped to view your converted Tower! Now, question 1, do you open up the WT for guests? We also need more webcams along the line! Q2: Can we ride in the driver's seat when the line is fully open, as this is something lots of walkers asked yesterday?
ReplyDeleteAgreed re the lack of webcams on the S&C - it is though work in progress as the remoter parts of the line get good broadband. We used to welcome visitors but insurance was a problem. Puzzled by Q2. The driver has to sit there!
DeleteWebCam: I think one at Dent would be Fab! (I am told the S&C trust own it!!) Plus Lazonby/KS/Settle!... I was amazed at how basic the Dent station was, no toilets! No ticket machine, maybe that's more NR/Northern than S&C issue....
DeleteTour of your Tower: I was outside your Tower last week with my dog, and a member of the public said it was (in the past) open on set days? I was from Cheshire so its a long way.....You never know until you ask!! Driver's Seat: Lots of walkers who stopped me on my way walking up from Ribblehead to Dent said that they wanted to sit with the driver and get the best possible view of the S&C line, I said look on Youtube that has a few films from the cabs, and relax and enjoy! If you do open the tower, I would love to view....
Absolutely agree re lack of RailCam at Dent. There's bags of broadband there, the views are superb yet FoSCL, though they own it, have not done it. No toilets or ticket machines at Dent - one for Northern & NR. Toilets at Settle, Appleby, Garsdale & Carlisle. Just pay on the train. Water tower open for occasional visits by appointment. Insurance costs preclude more regular opening.
DeleteOK, thanks, Walkers near Dent (using train with me) said Dent was a private home, then bought by Railway trust. What dates do you have for Water Tower Appointments? I also just have to say how brilliant Settle is for a walk around! Nice Cafe next to Butchers! Andy
